Environmental planning

Learn how Wrenford protects its rivers, lakes, and groundwater through site assessments, monitoring reports, and floodplain guidelines.

Take action to protect Wrenford's environment

You can help keep the Tamsin River, Ambrel Lake, and our local soil safe by following the City's environmental planning rules. Whether you are developing a property, checking groundwater data, or planning a project near a creek, these guidelines show you how to do it right.

How to submit an environmental site assessment

If you plan to build on a site that was previously used for industry or waste, you must test the ground before work begins. You will need a Phase I or Phase II environmental site assessment.

  • Phase I: You review the history of the site using maps, permits, and old records to look for past contamination.
  • Phase II: If the Phase I review shows risks, you hire a consultant to take soil and water samples.

All assessments must follow the Environmental Site Assessment Guidelines (2025 Edition). You can download the terms of reference and submission checklist from the Planning & Development office. Once your consultant finishes the testing, you submit the full report through the Environmental site assessment portal or drop it off at City Hall.

Rules for floodplains and natural areas

Development near the Tamsin River and Corvid Creek Ravine must follow strict setback rules. You cannot build or dig too close to the water because flooding and erosion are real risks.

You must check the Flood development guidelines before starting any project. The Tamsin Valley Conservation Authority issues permits for work in these natural hazard areas. The City of Wrenford Official Plan sets out policies to protect these spaces for the long term.

View waste facility monitoring data

You can track the health of local groundwater by reading the City's monitoring reports. We test the soil and water around the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility and several former industrial sites on a regular schedule.

The City publishes quarterly groundwater monitoring reports for public review. These documents show water quality levels, soil gas readings, and any steps taken to manage risks. If you live near a monitored site and have concerns about odours or water quality, the environmental planning team can explain the results and next steps.
