About the bylaw
The Property Standards By-law 2020-088 sets the minimum rules for keeping your property safe and in good repair under the Municipal Act, 2001. It covers everything from working smoke alarms and secure fences to clean yards and safe electrical wiring. The bylaw applies to all properties in the City, including rental units, owner-occupied homes, and commercial buildings. It works alongside the Ontario Building Code and the Building Code Act, 1992, so your home stays up to code with provincial rules.
How inspections work
Most inspections start with a complaint or a request from you or a neighbour. Our by-law officers visit the site to check for issues that could affect health or safety. They also carry out routine checks in neighbourhoods that have seen a rise in rental vacancies or maintenance problems. If an officer finds a violation, they will take photos and note the exact location of the problem.
Receiving a notice
If a property does not meet the bylaw, the owner receives a Property Standards Notice. The notice lists every issue and gives a clear deadline to fix them. You have 30 days to start the work, and the notice tells you when the final check must happen. If you need more time, you can ask for an extension before the deadline passes. If the work is not done, the City can hire a contractor to fix it and bill you for the cost. You can appeal a notice to the Wrenford Licensing and Community Standards Board within 30 days.
Report a problem
You can report a safety hazard or a maintenance problem on a property near you. Please share the address and a short description of what you see, like an overgrown lot, a broken window, or a fence that is falling down. Our team reviews every report within 10 business days and decides whether an inspection is needed. Reports are kept confidential, so your name will not be shared with the property owner.
Questions and contact
If you need help understanding the bylaw or want to know if a project needs a permit, reach out to our Property Standards team. We are located in Room 310 at City Hall and can meet by appointment or by phone. You can also email us with photos of the issue so we can review it before a site visit.
