What is a temporary use permit?
A temporary use permit allows you to use a piece of land or a building for a purpose that is not normally allowed in your zone, but only for a specific amount of time. This is useful for seasonal businesses, community groups, or short-term projects that fit within our neighbourhoods.
When do you need one?
You may need a temporary use permit if you want to do any of the following:
- Run a seasonal stand or seasonal business on your property
- Host a community event or fundraiser in a private yard or park
- Store construction materials or equipment on a residential lot
- Hold a short-term garage or yard sale on private land
- Use a commercial space for a pop-up market or special event
If your activity is not listed in the Zoning By-law 2016-040 as a permitted use, it likely needs a temporary permit. We review every request to make sure it does not cause noise, traffic, or parking problems for your neighbours.
How to apply
Applications are reviewed by Planning and Development staff. Please follow these steps:
- Download the Temporary Use Permit Application Form from the Forms section.
- Fill out the form and include a site plan showing where your activity will take place, how people will enter and leave, and how you will handle waste and parking.
- Submit your application and the required fee to the Planning and Development desk at City Hall, or email it to [email protected].
- Allow four to six weeks for staff to review your request and notify you of a decision.
If your activity affects public streets, sidewalks, or parking, you may also need a Street Use Permit or a Parking Permit. Check the Roads & Winter Maintenance page for more details.
Fees and charges
A fee is required to process your application. The standard fee for a temporary use permit is $150.00. Additional fees may apply if your activity requires a noise variance, a street closure, or a fire safety inspection. All fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151.
After approval
Once your permit is approved, you will receive a signed copy with the exact dates and conditions attached. You must display the permit on-site during your activity. If your plans change, or if you need more time, contact the Planning and Development office immediately. A permit does not replace other required licences, such as a Business Licence or a Food Premises Permit.
Wrenford Police Service and By-law Enforcement officers may visit your site to ensure conditions are met. If you break the rules of the permit, we can shut down the activity and charge a fine under the Provincial Offences Act.
