Using fire hydrants

Learn how to apply for a temporary fire hydrant use permit, review the required fees, and follow the safety rules for construction and filming projects.

Overview

Draws of water from City fire hydrants for construction, filming, or other approved projects require a temporary permit. All applicants must follow the rules below to protect the water system and public safety.

When you need a permit

You must apply for a permit before using a hydrant. Permits are issued for:

  • Construction dust control and compaction
  • Filming and special effects
  • Water main flushing and system testing
  • Demolition site preparation

Permits are not issued for:

  • Concrete or cement mixing
  • Irrigation or landscaping
  • Filling hot tubs, pools, or water features
  • Power washing or pressure washing
  • Core drilling or pavement cutting

Find an available hydrant

Use the City's online hydrant map to locate a hydrant near your site. Blue dots show hydrants approved for permit use. Red dots are for fire use only and cannot be used under a permit. If you need help finding a hydrant, email Water Operations at [email protected] or call 519-555-0100.

Rules for using a hydrant

Once approved, you must follow these conditions:

  • Use only one hydrant at a time to maintain system pressure.
  • Install a tested backflow preventer and use a City hydrant key to operate it.
  • Allow a minimum of four full business days for a City inspector to check the hydrant before you start work.
  • Do not park within five metres of the hydrant, and keep two metres of clearance on all sides.
  • Unauthorized use or accessing a hydrant without a permit can result in fines under the Water and Wastewater By-law 2017-090.

How to apply and pay

  1. Prepare your documents: Have the exact hydrant ID number, your project purpose, and a valid backflow assembly test report (dated within the last year) ready.
  2. Submit your application: Email [email protected] or visit the intake desk at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street.
  3. Pay your fees: All fees are due at the time of application through the ePermit portal or by credit card at City Hall. Fees must be paid at least three business days before your planned start date.
