What you can do

You may apply for a short-term construction permit to erect a tent, stage, greenhouse, pop-up space, or similar structure for an event or seasonal business. This covers summer fairs, church gatherings, markets, and short-term commercial uses on private or public land in Wrenford.

How to apply

Submit your application through the online Wrenford ePermit Portal or visit the Planning and Development counter in person at Wrenford City Hall. You must include a completed application form signed by the property owner and the applicant, a site plan showing the structure's location and clearances, and structural drawings stamped by a licensed engineer for any building over 10 square metres or stages higher than 1.2 metres. You must also provide proof of liability insurance naming the City of Wrenford as an additional insured.

Staff review your file within 10 business days of receiving a complete application. Once approved, you will receive an email with your permit fee. The permit is not valid until you pay. We will email the approved permit and drawings to you.

Permit fees

Short-term construction permits are charged on a monthly basis. Fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151.

Structure size Monthly fee
Up to 50 square metres $150.00
51 to 200 square metres $275.00
Over 200 square metres $450.00

Permits expire 12 months after issuance unless you apply for an extension. A 10 per cent extension fee applies.

Rules and safety

Short-term structures must keep occupants safe. The following rules apply to all applications:

  • Structures over 10 square metres require a permit.
  • Structures must be at least 3 metres from other buildings, property lines, or public sidewalks unless built with approved non-combustible materials.
  • If you place multiple tents or gazebos closer than 3 metres apart, the City counts them as one single building.
  • Stages that are more than 1.2 metres above grade require a permit and must meet structural engineering standards.
  • Tent coverings and fabrics must meet the CAN/ULC-S109 fire resistance standard. Traditional tipis with natural coverings are exempt if supervised.
  • Combustible materials like hay, straw, or wood shavings cannot be stored inside or near the structure.
  • Portable fire extinguishers must be placed inside or right outside the structure.
  • Electrical cords and panels must be kept away from public access. Open flames are not allowed unless a separate fire safety permit is approved.
  • Cooking appliances must sit on a stable base, keep 1 metre of clearance on all sides, and use approved ventilation if they produce grease or oil vapours.

Other permits you may need

Depending on your event or business, you might need additional approvals:

  • Park or facility booking: If you plan to set up on City property, contact Central Scheduling to reserve the space.
  • Street use permit: If your structure or event blocks a sidewalk or requires a lane closure, you must apply for a street use permit.
  • Alcohol serving: If you serve alcohol on City land, you need a special occasion licence from the provincial alcohol authority.
