Wrenford waste diversion master plan adopted by council

City Council approved the Wrenford Waste Diversion Master Plan on Thursday, October 15, setting a clear target to divert 60 per cent of residential waste from the landfill by 2030. The plan was presented at the regular Council meeting in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

The master plan outlines a ten-year strategy to reduce waste generation, expand recycling and organics programs, and support local businesses in transitioning to circular economy practices. It builds on the city's existing Blue Box and Green Bin collection services and introduces new initiatives to tackle construction waste, electronics recycling, and household hazardous materials.

"This plan gives us a roadmap to meet our environmental goals while keeping costs manageable for residents," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "It focuses on education, infrastructure, and partnerships so that every neighbourhood can participate in waste reduction."

Key elements of the approved plan include:

  • Expanding curbside organics collection to all multi-unit buildings by the end of 2027.
  • Launching a free home composting starter kit program for residents in older neighbourhoods.
  • Upgrading the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility with a new construction and demolition sorting line.
  • Introducing a mandatory commercial waste audit for businesses generating more than 500 kilograms of waste per week.
  • Supporting the Wrenford Public Library with dedicated sustainability programming and equipment lending.

The city will now move to draft the necessary by-law amendments to support these changes. The draft Waste Management By-law will go out for public consultation in early 2027, followed by a Council vote in the spring.

Residents can learn more about current collection schedules, sorting rules, and how to sign up for the new organics program by visiting the Garbage & Recycling section. The full master plan document is available on the Waste management master plan page.
