City of Wrenford crews began flushing storm drains across the downtown core on March 4, and work will continue through the end of the month. This annual maintenance keeps catch basins clear of debris and sediment so rainwater can flow freely during the busy spring thaw.
The downtown corridor, including Mercer, Tamsin, Mill, Water, and Church Streets, sees heavy foot and vehicle traffic throughout the year. Keeping the underground drainage network open helps prevent localized flooding that can disrupt deliveries, block sidewalks, and inconvenience shoppers and employees. The Wrenford Transit routes that run through the core will also benefit from unobstructed curbs and lanes.
Crews use high-pressure water trucks and vacuum equipment to push leaves, sand, and road grit into the catch basins, where it is collected and taken to the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Technicians also check that grates and covers are secure and report any needed repairs to the Roads & Winter Maintenance team.
Businesses and residents in the downtown area should move vehicles from designated flushing zones when signs are posted, usually between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You can find a map of the flushing schedule and report any drainage issues through the Wrenford 311 service line at 311 or 519-555-0100.
“Keeping our storm drains clear is a simple but essential step to protect downtown businesses and residents from spring flooding,” said Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning. “When water can move quickly through the pipes, we reduce the risk of backups that can damage storefronts and delay deliveries.”
The City coordinates this work with the Downtown BIA and local merchants to minimize disruption during peak shopping hours. If you are planning a storefront upgrade or a special event in the downtown core, the Economic Development team can help you navigate permits and ensure your project aligns with city infrastructure plans.
