City invests in downtown streetscape improvements

Starting this fall, the City will begin a $4.2 million streetscape improvement project along Mercer Street in the downtown core. Work will focus on the stretch between Tamsin Street and Water Street, as well as the surrounding Market Square area. The project is part of the 2026–2029 Capital Plan and aims to make the downtown area safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for shoppers and visitors.

Crews will replace cracked sidewalks, install new streetlights, add tree planters, and upgrade benches. These upgrades support local merchants by encouraging more foot traffic and longer visits. The City has already worked with the Downtown Wrenford Business Improvement Area to design features that match the needs of downtown shop owners.

“Investing in our downtown streetscape is an investment in our local economy,” says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “When people enjoy walking around downtown, they stop at local shops and cafes. This project helps us build a more vibrant and resilient community for everyone.”

Crews will start work in mid-September. To keep traffic moving, lane closures will happen overnight on weekdays between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. During the day, work will be done in sections to leave at least one lane open. You may see detours or temporary parking restrictions along Mercer Street. Please follow all signs and avoid using side streets as shortcuts.

Business owners and residents in the area will receive mailers with specific dates and access instructions. If you have questions about how the work affects your property or deliveries, contact the Roads & Winter Maintenance team at 519-555-0140.

The project is expected to finish by late spring 2027. Once complete, the improved downtown will support more foot traffic and longer visits for local merchants.
