City celebrates groundbreaking for new affordable housing

Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price, City Manager Robert Eng, and planning staff joined representatives from Wrenford Family Services today at 850 Northgate Boulevard to break ground on the new Northgate Family Residences. The project marks a major step forward in the City’s commitment to building safe, affordable homes for local families and older adults.

The new six-storey building will bring 80 units of affordable housing to the Northgate neighbourhood. The design includes a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, with a portion of units built to accessible standards. Ground floor space will host a community plaza and a new childcare facility with 45 spaces for infants and preschoolers. You can also enjoy a shared rooftop garden and secure bicycle storage. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2027, with families moving in shortly after.

The City of Wrenford is supporting the project through the Wrenford Housing Capital Initiative and by waiving development cost charges, saving the project nearly $1.2 million. The Province of Ontario is providing construction funding, and Wrenford Family Services is contributing land equity and will manage the building once it opens. The City also waived over $350,000 in planning and inspection fees to help keep costs down.

“This isn’t just a building; it is a home for dozens of our neighbours and a vital piece of the community,” says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “I am thrilled to see construction start on Northgate Family Residences. By working with the Province and Wrenford Family Services, we are creating a welcoming place where families can stay and grow right here in Wrenford.”

The City continues to advance its housing goals through the Wrenford Housing Strategy 2025–2030. We are focused on delivering more rental and ownership options, supporting community operators, and making sure you have a place to call home.
