City breaks ground on 80-unit affordable housing at Ambrel Lake Park in May

On May 12, 2026, the City of Wrenford and a not-for-profit housing provider broke ground on a new 80-unit affordable rental building near Ambrel Lake Park. The project adds much-needed supply to the region and marks a key step in the city's housing plan.

The site sits just south of the existing park amenities at 1350 Ambrel Lake Road. The eight-storey building will include a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, with rent geared to income. Construction is expected to finish in late 2028. The City is supporting the project through a development cost charge waiver and a municipal housing grant.

"Affordable housing is a priority for all Ontarians. We need more units, and we are working with our partners to create solutions," says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "This project will directly support residents who are looking for a safe, stable place to call home in Wrenford. We are proud to break ground on a development that aligns with our housing strategy and our commitment to inclusive growth."

Once construction is complete, the building will be managed by a regional housing co-operative that will handle tenant applications and waitlists. The groundbreaking ceremony included representatives from the housing provider, the City’s planning and corporate services teams, and local community members. Ambrel Lake Park has long been a gathering place for the community, and this development will bring more residents who will enjoy the boardwalk, playground, and picnic shelters nearby. The project creates green construction jobs and will include ground-floor retail space for a local grocery co-op.
