Renoviction bylaw changes to support tenants’ rights take effect

Wrenford Council approved changes to the Residential Tenancies By-law 2025-098 earlier this year. The updated rules take effect today, June 10, 2025, and are designed to protect renters from unfair evictions linked to building projects. The changes make it harder for landlords to use renovations as an excuse to remove long-term tenants.

Under the new rules, landlords must now give renters at least 120 days' written notice before asking them to leave for major renovations. The City will also review complaints from tenants who feel they are being pushed out unfairly. If a landlord violates the new notice period or tries to evict a tenant for speaking up about maintenance issues, the City can issue fines of up to $5,000.

"We want Wrenford to be a city where people can stay in their homes without fear of sudden displacement," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "These changes keep our rental market fair and stable for everyone, and they make sure building projects do not come at the cost of your housing security."

If you are a renter who receives a notice with less than 120 days, or if you suspect your landlord is using renovations to force you out, you should contact the By-law Enforcement team right away. You can send an email to [email protected] or call 519-555-0100. Our team will review your case and explain your options. Landlords planning building work are reminded to follow the new rules and share the required notice with your tenants.
