Fire crews at Fire Station 2 on Northgate Boulevard are back to full speed after the city finished replacing the station's bay doors on June 25. The old doors had been sticking and letting in cold air, which slowed truck movements and raised heating bills.
Infrastructure and planning crews worked closely with the fire department to get the new, insulated doors installed over a three-day window in late June. The upgrade includes heavy-duty tracks, motorized openers, and better seals to keep rain and snow out. The new doors also have sensors that stop them from closing if anything is in the way.
"The faster the doors open, the faster the trucks leave the bay," said Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning. "This upgrade makes a real difference for emergency response and for the staff who keep this building running."
During the installation, Fire Station 2 operated on a reduced schedule. Trucks from Fire Station 1 (Headquarters) on Water Street covered calls in the nearby Northgate and Benchlands areas. All emergency calls are answered 24/7 through 911, and residents should not worry about delays.
The project was funded through the city's 2025 capital budget for fire facility upgrades. The old doors were recycled at the city's drop-off depots where possible. This work is part of a longer plan to update equipment at all city fire stations, which you can track on the Roads & Winter Maintenance page.
