Fire safety plans mandatory for new Benchlands rental properties

The City of Wrenford is reminding landlords who are adding new rental units to the Benchlands neighbourhood that fire safety plans must be approved before tenants move in. This requirement applies to all new multi-unit buildings in the area to ensure every resident has a safe place to live.

Starting this fall, the City is enforcing fire safety plan rules for newly converted or newly built rental properties in Benchlands. These plans help firefighters know exactly how a building is laid out, where exits are located, and how fire detection systems work. Landlords must submit their plans through the online submission portal and pay the standard initial review fee of $125.00. Once approved, the plan must be kept on site and reviewed every year.

"We want to make sure that as our neighbourhoods grow, every resident has the same level of protection," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "A clear fire safety plan makes a big difference for firefighters and for the people who live in the building."

To get started, landlords should gather their building layout drawings, list all fire alarms and sprinkler systems, and complete the rental property fire safety plan template. The City's fire prevention officers are available to answer questions and review draft plans before the official submission. If a property fails inspection or does not have an approved plan, the City may issue a compliance order and charge a re-inspection fee of $75.00.

If you are a landlord in the Benchlands area, you should submit your plans as soon as possible to avoid delays with tenant move-ins.
