Council approves amendments to Official Plan supporting new housing density

At its February 17 meeting, Wrenford City Council approved amendments to the City of Wrenford Official Plan under the Planning Act, 2019 to allow more housing density across the city. The changes update the 2018 plan to meet provincial growth targets and support the construction of diverse housing options in growing neighbourhoods like Wildrye and Northgate.

The updated Official Plan identifies key areas for increased residential density, including corridors along Tamsin Street and Benchlands Drive. It also introduces a new framework for Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing, allowing homeowners to build secondary suites, garden suites, and coach houses on their properties. By simplifying land use descriptions and updating zoning rules, the City aims to streamline the development process and reduce wait times for applicants.

"This plan makes sure our community grows in a way that works for everyone," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "By allowing more diverse housing types, we can keep families in the neighbourhoods they love while meeting the needs of a growing population."

Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning, noted that the amendments lay the groundwork for faster, more predictable development. Staff will now work on updating the Zoning By-law 2016-040 to align with the new Official Plan policies. If you own a home, you can apply for planning approvals starting March 1, 2025, through the Planning & Development department.

If you want to review the full Official Plan amendments, you can submit feedback through the public portal. The City will host two information sessions in March to walk neighbourhoods through the changes. You can follow future Council decisions and meeting schedules on the Council page.
