Starting this spring, the City of Wrenford is adding eight new snowplows and two salt spreaders to its winter fleet. The expansion is part of the 2026 Capital Budget, which City Council approved earlier this year to keep our roads safe and clear during the cold months.
The new equipment will be delivered to the Civic Operations Centre at 455 Railside Road by April 2025. It will replace older vehicles that have been in service for over a decade. Roads & Winter Maintenance crews will use the machines to clear residential streets and main roads across all six wards.
Having reliable equipment is the first step to keeping our streets safe when the snow falls, says James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. These new machines will help us respond faster and clear roads more efficiently, even during heavy snowfall.
The 2026 Capital Budget totals $42.5 million, covering everything from road resurfacing to bridge repairs. The Winter Fleet Renewal Project takes $1.8 million from this total to ensure the City has the right tools for the season. Investing in newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles also helps the City lower its operating costs over time.
Wrenford sees an average of 240 centimetres of snow each year. The Roads & Winter Maintenance team works around the clock to keep the city moving. Alongside the new plows, crews will continue using sand, salt, and brine to treat icy patches. You can track snow clearing schedules and report blocked catch basins on the Roads & Winter Maintenance page.
The City clears residential streets when there is eight centimetres of snow or more, and main roads at five centimetres. You can help by following the Snow and ice bylaws, which include the overnight parking ban from December 1 to March 31. Parking restrictions allow plows to reach every curb safely.
The fleet expansion is one of many infrastructure projects funded by the 2026 budget. You can read more about how the City plans to spend taxpayer dollars on roads, water, and parks at View the current annual budget.
