On June 9, 2025, the City of Wrenford announced that Council has approved $1.85 million in funding for the Street Cleaning Grant Programme. The grants will run from 2025 to 2027 and support local non-profit organizations in providing job training and employment opportunities for residents facing barriers to work.
For over a decade, this programme has kept our streets and lanes clean by supplementing City crews and offering meaningful work. The grants cover daily litter collection, needle pickup, and light sweeping in public spaces using carts and hand tools. This work complements the heavy-duty street cleaning done by City crews using sweepers and water trucks.
"The Street Cleaning Grant Programme does double duty for our community," says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "It keeps our public spaces tidy, but more importantly, it gives people a chance to build work skills, gain confidence, and contribute to their neighbourhoods."
The 2025–2027 funding cycle shifts the programme from an annual approval to a three-year commitment. This change gives partner organizations stable funding to plan their training schedules and hire staff. Recipients will include local employment services, youth outreach agencies, and community health groups. Each recipient must meet performance targets for hours worked, litter removed, and safety standards.
What you can do
Residents are encouraged to continue sorting their waste properly and using the City's waste collection services. You can also help by not littering and reporting illegal dumping to By-law Enforcement. If you or someone you know is looking for low-barrier work or skills training, visit the Careers page to see current opportunities with the City and our community partners.
The City thanks all partner organizations for their dedication to keeping Wrenford clean and supporting local employment. For more information about the programme or to view the full Council report, visit the News & Events page or contact the Community Services department at 519-555-0100.
