City approves schematic design for Northgate Aquatic Centre renewal

On August 5, 2025, City Council approved the schematic design for the Northgate Aquatic Centre renewal project at 910 Northgate Boulevard. This approval moves the project from the planning stage into detailed design and funding approval.

The schematic design outlines a modern, fully accessible aquatic complex that will replace the existing 50-metre pool and waterslide. The renewed facility will feature a 25-metre lap pool for lap swimming and swim events, a leisure pool for families, a dedicated dive tank with adjustable board heights, and a hot pool for wellness. The design also includes expanded fitness rooms, a multi-purpose community room, and updated washrooms and change rooms that meet the latest accessibility standards.

"This project is about more than just updating a building; it is about ensuring the Northgate Aquatic Centre remains a safe, accessible, and welcoming hub for our community for decades to come," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "We are listening carefully to resident feedback and building a facility that matches the needs of all Wrenford families."

The current centre has served the Northgate neighbourhood and city-wide aquatic programs since 2005. As the building reaches the end of its functional lifespan, the renewal ensures the site continues to support competitive diving, swim clubs, drop-in public swims, and fitness classes. The schematic design balances the City's budget and construction timelines while maximizing the use of the existing site.

Detailed design work will begin this fall. The City will host a series of in-person open houses and virtual sessions throughout the winter to share updated drawings and collect resident feedback on finishes, outdoor gathering spaces, and landscaping. A final public engagement period will run before the project moves to construction.

Construction is anticipated to start in late 2026. During the rebuild, the City will work with aquatic program staff to provide temporary pool space and adjusted program schedules so you can continue accessing swim lessons and drop-in swims without interruption.
