The City of Wrenford hosted its annual Canada Day in the Park celebration at Centennial Gardens on July 1, bringing together residents from every ward to honour the country's birthday with music, food, and community spirit. Under the direction of Council, the Recreation & Culture department coordinated a lineup that highlighted the many cultures that call Wrenford home.
The day began with opening remarks from Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price and City Manager Robert Eng, who welcomed families to the formal gardens in the heart of downtown. "Canada Day is a chance for us to come together as neighbours and celebrate the many cultures that make Wrenford home," said Mayor Okafor-Price. "I was so proud to see families from Riverside Flats to Wildrye gathering in Centennial Gardens to share their traditions."
After the official opening, the main stage at Centennial Gardens hosted a full day of performances. Local dance troupes, youth choirs, and musicians took the stage throughout the afternoon. A cultural craft market lined the garden paths, featuring vendors selling traditional foods, textiles, and handmade goods. Children enjoyed face painting, story time, and interactive games near the cenotaph.
Food trucks and community kitchens lined the perimeter of the gardens, offering everything from poutine and butter tarts to samosas and jerk chicken. The City ensured that all vendors met health and safety standards, and that waste was managed through the biweekly Green Bin collection.
Getting to the celebration was easy. Wrenford Transit ran special 20-series routes to the downtown core, and the Downtown Transit Terminal operated on a weekend schedule to handle the crowds. By-law Enforcement staff monitored the streets to keep traffic moving and parking safe for pedestrians.
The event was made possible through a combination of municipal funding and support from local groups. If you are planning a neighbourhood gathering, you can apply for small grants through the city's community funding program.
"We saw record attendance this year, and the feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive," said Events Coordinator Rosa Castellano. "It is a true testament to the spirit of our city."
