Benchlands Lookout Park trail repairs complete after storm damage

Crews have finished repairing storm washouts on the Tamsin River Trail System at Benchlands Lookout Park, reopening the multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists as of August 4, 2025. The work restores safe access to one of the trail system's main trailheads and reconnects the route that runs alongside the Tamsin River.

Heavy rain and high winds in late July 2025 caused erosion along a one-kilometre section of the trail near the Centennial Bridge approach. Parks staff and a contracted crew assessed the damage over the weekend and began filling and regrading the washout on July 29. The project included replacing crushed stone, stabilizing the sub-base with geotextile fabric, and replanting native grasses to prevent future erosion. Over the past week, crews also inspected drainage culverts along the corridor to ensure they are handling heavy runoff properly and installed additional signage warning users of steep grades and wet surfaces near the ravine edge.

"We know how much our residents value the trail network for commuting and exercise," says Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "Getting this section back in safe condition quickly was a priority for the Benchlands community and for anyone using the trail to get downtown."

The repaired section connects Riverside Flats Park to Benchlands Lookout Park, offering a flat, paved route for walkers, runners, and cyclists. The rest of the 64-kilometre trail network remains open. If you notice fresh erosion or blocked drains along the trail, please report them through the City's online service request form or by calling 311. Keep dogs leashed where posted and stay on the designated path to protect the new plantings.
