On July 25, 2024, City Council approved the Transit-Oriented Development Implementation Strategy for the downtown corridor. This plan directs future growth toward the area surrounding the Downtown Transit Terminal at 1 Market Square and along the main transit routes on Mercer and Tamsin Streets. The goal is to create neighbourhoods where you can live, work and shop without relying on a car.
The approved strategy updates the City of Wrenford Official Plan and Zoning By-law 2016-040 to allow taller, mixed-use buildings near transit stops. Developers will be encouraged to include ground-floor retail, affordable housing units and accessible public spaces. The plan also sets aside funding to upgrade sidewalks, crosswalks and bus shelters in the downtown core. These changes align with the Municipal Act, 2001 and the Planning Act, which encourage smart growth and efficient use of existing infrastructure.
"This strategy makes sure our transit system drives growth in the right places, creating walkable neighbourhoods where people can live, work and play without needing a car," says City Manager Robert Eng. "By concentrating development near the terminal and main transit routes, we are building a more connected and sustainable city for everyone."
The City will open a public consultation period from September 1 to November 30, 2024 to review proposed zoning changes and design guidelines. Residents, business owners and developers can attend in-person workshops at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, or share feedback online. The City will also host a virtual open house in October. All comments will be reviewed before final amendments are brought to Council for a vote in early 2025.
