The Tamsin River Run brought more than 2,500 runners, walkers, and families to the Tamsin River Trail this past May, marking the largest turnout in the event's history. The annual run, which follows the 64-kilometre multi-use trail system through the city's neighbourhoods, was made possible by the annual budget and steady property tax investment in our parks and trails.
"This is a clear sign that when we invest in our shared spaces, residents come out to enjoy them," says City Manager Robert Eng. "Every dollar spent on trail maintenance and safety improvements returns value to our community in health, connection, and local pride."
The increase in participation highlights the success of the Parks and Recreation Capital Works Program, which has funded recent upgrades to trailheads at Riverside Flats Park and Benchlands Lookout Park. Better lighting, wider paths, and new water stations along the route helped make the event safer and more comfortable for first-time runners and families alike. The city also expanded volunteer roles and added more support staff, which was funded through the operating budget.
Residents who enjoyed the run can help keep the momentum going. Check the Parks & Trails page for details on volunteer opportunities, and let the city know how you use our trails by completing the Community Budget Survey. Your feedback directly shapes how we spend property tax dollars on recreation and infrastructure next year.
The city is also reviewing participation data to plan future trail expansions, including the Corvid Creek Ravine Pathway Extension and the Ambrel Lake Loop. These projects are part of the long-term capital plan and will be discussed at upcoming council meetings.
Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, cheered, or volunteered. The Tamsin River Run is a celebration of what we build together, and it shows exactly why a strong local budget matters. For the full event recap, photos, and next year's dates, visit the News & Events page.
