The City of Wrenford has released updated guidelines for sidewalk snow removal as we move into March. While the heavy snowfall of early winter is behind us, the responsibility to keep sidewalks clear does not end when the snowplows finish their runs.
Under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097, property owners and tenants must clear snow and ice from the sidewalks next to their homes and businesses within 24 hours after a storm stops falling. This rule applies all year round, but it is especially important in March as the weather shifts between freezing temperatures and rain. Clearing your sidewalk helps prevent slips and falls for pedestrians, neighbours, and children heading to school. For more details on how our crews operate, visit the Roads & Winter Maintenance section.
"March is a tricky month for sidewalks," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "We see a lot of freeze-thaw cycles that leave behind patches of ice. Clearing the snow quickly, and then sanding or salting the wet spots, makes a big difference for everyone walking by."
Here is what you need to know:
- Clear the full width of the sidewalk down to the pavement.
- Do not pile snow into the street or against your car. It blocks drainage and creates hazards for drivers and cyclists.
- If you use a shovel, leave a small mound of snow on the edge of the cleared path so pedestrians can walk in the middle.
- Do not use salt on the sidewalk itself if it is not plowed regularly, as it can damage concrete. Use sand or kitty litter for traction instead.
By-law officers are patrolling neighbourhoods to ensure compliance. Fines start at $150 for a first offence and go up to $300 for repeat violations during the same season. If you are unable to clear your own sidewalk due to a mobility condition or disability, you can apply for an exemption through the Apply for a snow route parking ban exemption process or ask a neighbour, property manager, or hired service to do it for you.
Notice a broken step, a cracked path, or a tree branch blocking the way? Use our online tool to Report a sidewalk issue so our crew can assess it and schedule repairs.
