Wrenford is making Fire Station 1 at 210 Water Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A6 more energy-efficient to save money and reduce the city's carbon footprint. Work begins on March 15, 2024, and will continue through October 30, 2024.
The project includes installing solar panels on the roof, replacing older windows with high-efficiency models, adding insulation to the walls and attic, and upgrading all lighting to LED fixtures. The upgrades are expected to cut the station's annual energy bill by thirty per cent. Crews will work on the roof and exterior walls first, which may cause some temporary noise. Interior work will follow once the building envelope is sealed.
You do not need to take any special action during the work period. The front desk will remain open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so you can still pick up burn permits, schedule smoke alarm checks, and speak with fire prevention staff. Firefighters will remain on duty and respond to emergencies as usual. Expect some noise from work crews between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and the crew will keep the sidewalk clear for pedestrians.
"These upgrades are a smart investment for our community, lowering operating costs while keeping our first responders ready for any emergency," said City Manager Robert Eng. "Every dollar we save on energy goes back into the services you rely on, like fire prevention and emergency response."
The work is funded through the Wrenford Green Fleet & Facilities Initiative, a city program designed to make municipal buildings more sustainable. The project is expected to cost $1,200,000.00.
