Residents can start putting out their fall leaves for collection this weekend. The City of Wrenford has released its fall leaf collection schedule for October, November, and December 2024. Getting leaves off the streets and away from catch basins helps keep our neighbourhoods safe and dry when the snow starts to fall.
Collection dates
Place your green bin and paper yard-waste bags at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled Saturday. Collecting leaves in paper bags helps them dry out and makes it easier for crews to pick them up.
- October: 13 & 14
- November: 10 & 11
- December: 8 & 9
If you have extra leaves that do not fit in your green bin or paper bags, you can drop them off at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility or the Northgate Drop-off Depot. Both sites are open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through the end of the season. Leaves dropped off at the depot are free for Wrenford residents.
How to prepare your leaves
Follow these simple rules to make sure your leaves get collected:
- Set out your green bin and paper yard-waste bags by 7:00 a.m. on your collection Saturday.
- Do not set out leaves in plastic bags, including bags labelled compostable or biodegradable.
- Keep paper bags as dry as possible before setting them out to prevent tearing.
- Do not set out your green bin on extra leaf collection weekends.
- If your leaves are not picked up on the scheduled day, leave them out. Crews will return to missed areas.
Street clearing and catch basins
Starting in November, City crews will begin a city-wide leaf clearing programme to sweep leaves off the streets. To help our crews do their best work, please move your vehicles if you see temporary no-stopping signs posted on your street. This usually happens on weekday mornings.
Residents and businesses should never rake or blow leaves onto streets, sidewalks, or catch basins. Leaves in catch basins can block water flow and cause local flooding during rain or snowmelt. Blocking a catch basin is a fineable offence under the Waste Management By-law 2023-105. If you notice a blocked catch basin near your home, please report it through 311 or the City's online service request form.
Using leaves in your garden
Collected leaves are turned into nutrient-rich compost at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. You can also use your own leaves as mulch in your garden to retain moisture and protect plant roots from winter cold. If you have a backyard composter, leaves make a great addition to balance food scraps.
"Getting leaves out of the streets and away from catch basins helps keep our neighbourhoods safe and dry when the snow starts to fall," said Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "We also encourage residents to keep their green bins out year-round so they can layer leaves with food scraps to reduce odours and pests."
