Starting in July 2024, the City of Wrenford is rolling out a major environmental upgrade at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. The project will install new recycling sorting equipment and upgrade the site’s stormwater wetland to keep runoff clean before it reaches Corvid Creek and the wider Parks & Trails network.
The facility at 3500 Concession 4 Road is the City’s main drop-off depot for household hazardous waste, leaf and yard waste, and construction debris. The new automated sorting line will help staff separate recyclable materials more quickly and accurately. This means cleaner Blue Box and Green Bin materials and fewer contaminants sent to the landfill. The upgraded stormwater wetland will naturally filter rain and snowmelt, removing oils and heavy metals before the water leaves the property.
Construction will run from July to September 2024. While the facility stays open, you may notice a few changes. Heavy equipment will move around the site, so please follow posted detours and keep your vehicle in the designated lanes. Noise and dust will be managed with water trucks and temporary fencing. The City will also run fewer waste collection trucks through the main entrance during peak construction weeks, so some curbside pickup routes in the south-east neighbourhoods may shift by one day.
“This upgrade is about protecting the Tamsin River watershed and making it easier for residents to recycle right the first time,” said Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. “We are investing in equipment that will work for decades, reduce odours for our staff, and keep our local waterways safe.”
You do not need to change how you sort your waste. Just keep using your Blue Box for paper, cardboard, and clean plastics, and your Green Bin for food and yard waste. If you have questions about the construction schedule or need a copy of the site safety plan, contact the facility at 519-555-0128 or visit the Garbage & Recycling page for weekly updates.
