East Wrenford Waste Management Facility expansion approved by council

On July 15, 2024, City Council approved a $4.2 million expansion project at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. The project will add a new organics processing building and upgrade the drop-off depot area to handle more green bin and yard waste.

The expansion addresses growing demand. Wrenford's waste diversion rate has climbed steadily, but the city is working toward a 60 per cent diversion target by 2030. The new building will triple the current composting and mulching capacity. It also includes a covered staging area for commercial waste and a separate lane for hazardous waste drop-offs.

"Expanding our waste management infrastructure is a necessary step to keep our neighbourhoods clean and our environment protected," said City Manager Robert Eng. "This project ensures we have the space and equipment to handle the waste we generate today and into the future."

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2025. Crews will need to close two access lanes at the facility for approximately six months. Residents and businesses should expect a temporary shift in the order of service during the build. The drop-off depot will remain open with adjusted hours.

The project was funded through the city's capital reserve and approved under the Waste Management By-law 2023-105. It aligns with the city's broader goal to reduce landfill use and support the Blue Box program, which is now run by producers.
