Starting Monday, August 5, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., Wrenford Council reviewed the plans for the Northgate Aquatic Centre at City Hall. After a detailed discussion, councillors voted to approve the schematic design. This decision moves the project into the detailed design phase and keeps the rebuild on schedule for an opening in the summer of 2027.
“Getting this design approved is a big step forward for our community,” said City Manager Robert Eng. “We heard from residents that the current facility needs a major update. The new plans keep the 50-metre lap pool and dive tank that locals love, while adding more space for lessons, wellness, and fitness.”
The approved design expands the building to roughly 2,800 square metres. The new aquatic area will include a 50-metre competition pool with a retractable cover, a dedicated teach pool, a large leisure pool with a beach entry and waterslide, and a wellness zone with a hot tub and sauna. The second floor will hold a modern fitness centre and activity rooms.
Outside the building, the plan adds a paved plaza at the main entrance, a continuous pathway around the site, and a new tree-lined parking lot with 200 spaces. The design also sets aside areas for planting 40 new trees once the landscaping plan is finished.
Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2025. We will ask for your input on the detailed plans this fall. You can share your thoughts at a public meeting or online.
The total budget for the rebuild is $42 million. This amount covers the building, the site work, and the equipment needed to run the centre for the next 30 years.
