On August 21, 2024, City Council approved the Westbrook Community Arena Vision Plan during a regular meeting at Council. The plan puts you and your community first, focusing on better access, more flexible programming space, and lower energy bills.
The approved vision makes the arena easier to navigate for everyone. You will see wider hallways, barrier-free entrances, and a new multi-purpose room that local groups can book for meetings and classes. The plan also upgrades the arena's two ice pads and the community hall, giving you reliable spaces for sports and social events all year long. New heating and lighting systems will keep the building comfortable while cutting operating costs.
"This is about making sure our community spaces work for everyone," says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "We are investing in a facility that grows with Westbrook and gives you the places you need to connect, learn, and play."
City Manager Robert Eng notes that the design phase will prioritize your feedback and long-term maintenance. Ward 2 Councillor Priya Raman adds, "The Westbrook neighbourhood has asked for a safer, warmer, and more flexible space. This plan delivers exactly that."
Administration will now move into the detailed design phase. You can share your thoughts at a series of public open houses this fall. The city aims to break ground in spring 2025, with the upgraded arena expected to open in late 2026.
