Council approves more than $1 million in cultural grants for equity

On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Wrenford City Council approved $1.05 million in grants to support local arts groups that promote equity, Indigenous leadership in the arts, and cultural infrastructure across the city.

These awards are the second round of the city's annual Cultural Equity and Heritage Grants programme. They include:

  • $420,000 in Cultural Equity and Accessibility Funding to support 18 local organizations led by equity-deserving communities.
  • $285,000 in Indigenous Arts and Culture grants to fund projects that centre Indigenous voices and languages.
  • $150,000 for public art programming at Fallsview Arts Centre and Centennial Gardens to install rotating exhibitions.
  • $125,000 to the Downtown Wrenford Business Improvement Area for a feasibility study on a cultural precinct.
  • $75,000 in one-time grants for heritage preservation at the Old Mill Museum & Archives and Railside Gallery.

"Arts and culture are the heartbeat of our community," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "These grants ensure that every resident, regardless of background, has a seat at the table and the chance to share their story through the arts."

The grants are awarded through a staff and peer-review process. Organizations that receive funding will begin their projects in the fall. You can view the full list of recipients and the council report on the Grants page.
