Council approves amendments to the Official Plan supporting new housing

At the regular Council meeting on April 23, 2024, the City of Wrenford approved amendments to the Official Plan. The changes update the city’s long-term land-use strategy to allow for more housing options and ensure new neighbourhoods are built with the parks, trails, and services you need.

The amendments respond to provincial legislation aimed at increasing housing supply across Ontario. The updates identify key growth areas along major corridors, simplify land-use descriptions, and provide a clear framework for small-scale multi-unit housing, such as laneway suites and secondary suites in existing homes. The plan also sets out how the city will manage growth in the rapidly developing Wildrye and Copper Ridge neighbourhoods while protecting the environment along the Tamsin River and Corvid Creek Ravine.

“This is a practical plan that gives developers clear rules while making sure our community keeps its character,” said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “By updating the Official Plan, we are making it easier to build the homes our families need, the small businesses our downtown relies on, and the green spaces that make Wrenford a great place to live.”

The changes will be enforced through a new zoning by-law update later this year. You can view the full amendment report and submit feedback on the upcoming zoning changes through the Planning & Development portal. The city will also host a series of neighbourhood information sessions in May to walk you through how the changes affect your street.

Wrenford’s Official Plan is reviewed regularly to match the needs of a growing city. These amendments take effect immediately upon publication and will guide all future development applications for the next twenty years.
