On Thursday, November 14, 2024, City Council approved a $2.5 million capital investment to overhaul the streetscape in the downtown core. The project will run from spring 2025 to late 2026 and covers Mercer Street, Tamsin Street, and Water Street between Albert and Victoria Streets.
The work focuses on widening sidewalks, repairing uneven paving stones, adding new street trees, and upgrading lighting to make walking and cycling safer. It also includes new planters and benches along the retail corridor. The downtown area is the heart of Wrenford's economy, and these upgrades will keep the core welcoming for shoppers, visitors, and local business owners.
The project will be managed by the Roads and Winter Maintenance team in partnership with the Parks and Trails division. Construction crews will work in two phases to keep businesses open. Phase one will focus on the north side of Mercer Street from Market Square to Fallsview Road. Phase two will cover Tamsin Street and the Water Street waterfront walkway.
Expect some lane closures and temporary parking restrictions during business hours. Residents and business owners in the work zone will receive a direct mailing with your exact street block's schedule. If you notice a missed driveway or need a temporary access permit, contact the Roads team at least 48 hours before your work starts.
"Making our downtown more walkable and green is a priority for this council," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "These improvements will support local businesses, improve safety for pedestrians, and give our core a fresh look that honours our history while planning for the future."
