Civic Operations Centre completes energy efficiency retrofit project

The City of Wrenford has finished a major energy efficiency retrofit at the Civic Operations Centre at 455 Railside Road. The project, funded through the 2024 capital budget, upgrades the building’s lighting, heating and cooling systems to save money and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Over the past eight months, crews replaced outdated fluorescent lights with high-efficiency LED fixtures throughout the facility. They also installed smart thermostats and upgraded insulation in the mechanical rooms. These changes lower the building’s energy demand and make the work environment safer and brighter for the staff who manage roads, water systems and fleet operations.

“We wanted to put every dollar to work where it counts,” said City Manager Robert Eng. “Cutting energy waste at our own buildings means we can keep property taxes stable while still funding the road repairs and waste collection that residents rely on every day.”

The retrofit is expected to reduce annual hydro bills by approximately $45,000.00. Those savings will be redirected back into essential services, helping to balance the operating budget without raising taxes. The project also cuts the building’s carbon footprint by about 120 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, supporting the city’s climate targets.

You can see how this project fits into our wider financial plan on the Budget page. The money saved each year helps fund the long term financial plan and supports the current annual budget. For details on how the city tracks these savings, visit the capital financing policies page.

The Civic Operations Centre remains open Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The front desk at 519-555-0112 is ready to answer questions about road repairs, water service or winter maintenance. For more on how the city manages its infrastructure spending, visit City Services.
