City opens summer patio permits for downtown businesses

The City of Wrenford is now accepting applications for Summer Patio Permits for downtown businesses. Starting today, May 31, 2024, eligible businesses in the downtown grid can apply to set up outdoor seating on the sidewalk. This new programme supports local restaurants and cafes in offering their customers fresh air and extra space during the warmer months.

To receive a permit, you must submit an application through the City’s eLicence Portal. The permit allows for outdoor furniture and service areas on public sidewalks within the downtown boundary, roughly along Mercer Street between Water Street and Market Square. All patios must follow the new Sidewalk Patio Safety By-law 2024-067. This by-law makes sure that seating does not block sidewalks or fire hydrants, and that businesses keep noise levels down for neighbours.

“We are thrilled to help downtown merchants bring the vibrancy of the core right to the sidewalk,” said Isabel Moreno, Economic Development Manager. “Summer patios encourage people to linger, browse local shops, and enjoy a meal outside. It is a simple step that boosts foot traffic and strengthens our local economy.”

Businesses must also meet standard fire and accessibility requirements. Patios cannot block the path for strollers or wheelchairs, and any heating equipment must meet the Ontario Building Code. The City’s By-law Enforcement team will conduct initial inspections before a permit is approved. If you need help with your application, contact the Economic Development team at [email protected].

Applications are open until August 31, 2024, or until the allocated budget for permits is used up. The permit fee is $250.00 per business. Once approved, the patio can operate from June 1 through Labour Day. For a full list of requirements and safety guidelines, visit the Business Licences page.
