The City of Wrenford is launching its free tree planting program for spring 2024. Starting next Monday, January 22, residents can visit the City's website to reserve one of 150 young trees for their property. This initiative is a key part of the Canopy for Wrenford initiative, which aims to expand our urban forest and improve neighbourhood air quality.
"This program gives our residents a simple way to help Wrenford grow greener," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "Whether you plant a small shade tree near your driveway or a native species along your property line, every tree helps us build a more resilient city."
Residents living in any of Wrenford's neighbourhoods, from Riverside Flats to the Benchlands, can select from a list of approved native species. The City provides detailed guides on how to choose the right tree for your space, how to plant it correctly, and how to care for it through its first growing season. To make the process easier, the City will also deliver the trees directly to participants' doorsteps at no cost.
To reserve a tree, residents will need to fill out a short online form and confirm their mailing address. The form opens on January 22 at 8:30 a.m. Residents are encouraged to act quickly, as the 150 available trees are expected to be reserved within the first week. If you do not live near a main road, please let staff know so a delivery person can leave the tree safely.
All trees distributed through this program must be planted in accordance with the Tree Protection By-law 2018-045. This means keeping a safe distance from utility lines and property boundaries, and making sure the tree has enough room to grow. The City's Parks & Trails team will also send out a follow-up email with seasonal watering tips to help your tree survive the hot summer months.
For more information on how to care for your new tree, view the full list of available species, and read our tree protection guidelines, please visit the Parks & Trails section or participate in the tree planting program.
