City council approves budget for downtown streetscape improvements

On August 5, 2024, Wrenford council approved a $4.2 million budget to fund a major streetscape improvement project across the downtown core. The project will run from September 2024 to August 2026.

Work will focus on Mercer Street, Water Street, and Market Square. Upgrades include new sidewalks, wider crosswalks, updated street lighting, and increased green space with new trees. The project is part of the City’s 2024–2026 Capital Plan and aims to make the downtown area safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for shoppers and visitors.

“Investing in our downtown is investing in the future of Wrenford,” says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “These improvements will support local businesses, make it easier for people to walk and cycle, and give our community a place they can be proud of.”

Construction will happen in phases to keep businesses open. Traffic will be adjusted, and there will be temporary lane reductions during peak hours. Residents and visitors should expect delays and follow detour signs. The City will post updates on the Roads & Winter Maintenance page and through Service Alerts.

The City is also offering support to local businesses through the Downtown business improvement grants programme. Owners can apply for funding to help with temporary signage, outdoor patio permits, and community activations during construction.
