The City of Wrenford is inviting residents to help beautify downtown this weekend with a free community planting day at Centennial Gardens. The event takes place on Saturday, July 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Parks and Trails team is looking for volunteers to help plant new shrubs and wildflowers in the formal garden beds near the cenotaph on Victoria Street.
Whether you have a green thumb or have never planted a seed, you are welcome to join. The City will provide all the tools, soil, plants, and mulch you need. Residents are asked to bring their own gardening gloves, a reusable water bottle, and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Families with children aged eight and older are encouraged to attend; younger kids can help with the easier tasks under adult supervision.
“Centennial Gardens is a cherished space for weddings, quiet walks, and community gatherings,” said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. “Adding more native plants will help support local pollinators like bees and butterflies, and keep our downtown looking vibrant for everyone.”
This event is part of the City’s broader effort to enhance green spaces across the wards. Planting native species requires less water and maintenance over time, which helps the City manage park upkeep more sustainably. Volunteers will also learn about the different plants being added and how they help the local ecosystem.
To reserve your spot, please register on the Neighbourhoods page or call the City Services main line at 519-555-0100. Spaces are limited to fifty volunteers, so early registration is recommended. If the weather turns severe, the event will be postponed to the following Saturday.
After the planting work is finished, there will be light refreshments and a chance to chat with Parks staff and your neighbours. It is a great way to meet people from your ward while making a visible difference in a central public space.
