Bus electrification strategy second phase begins with ten new electric buses

Wrenford Transit is adding ten new electric buses to Routes 1, 3, 5, 8 and 12, starting Monday, August 19, 2024. The vehicles will be unveiled on Friday at the Downtown Transit Terminal by Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price and Transit Manager Daniel Osei.

These buses replace older diesel models on the city's busiest corridors. Each one travels up to 310 kilometres on a single charge, features a low-floor entrance for easier boarding, and seats 41 passengers. The new fleet cuts greenhouse gas emissions and reduces engine noise along Tamsin Street and Northgate Boulevard.

“This second phase brings us closer to a cleaner, quieter transit system for all riders across the city,” says Daniel Osei, Transit Manager. “By adding these electric buses to our most heavily used routes, we are improving reliability and comfort while keeping our commitment to a sustainable future.”

You will see the new buses on your regular commute. Timetables stay the same, but a few stops may shift slightly to match the new vehicle size. If you need to plan a trip ahead, check the latest maps on the Transit website or track arrivals in real time using the Wrenford Transit app. Report any schedule concerns to 311.

Wrenford Transit is working toward a fully electric fleet by 2040. Funding for this second phase came from federal and provincial grants alongside city capital reserves. For the full electrification timeline and charging infrastructure plans, see Bus electrification strategy.
