Work has started on the Benchlands Lookout Park natural area restoration project, a multi-phase improvement aimed at restoring native habitats and upgrading stormwater management along the west bank of the Tamsin River. The project is located at Benchlands Lookout Park, 500 Benchlands Drive, and is expected to continue through October 2024.
The restoration focuses on the steep ravine slopes and the natural areas surrounding the park's lookout point. Crews are removing invasive species and replanting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that support local birds and pollinators. At the same time, infrastructure crews are installing new rain gardens and bioswales to slow runoff before it reaches the Tamsin River. These green features filter pollutants and reduce flooding risk during heavy spring rains.
"Restoring the natural areas around Benchlands Lookout is a chance to reconnect the park with the Tamsin River valley and give wildlife a stronger foothold in the city", says Samuel Adeyemi, GM Infrastructure and Planning. "We are building green infrastructure that protects our waterways while keeping the park open and accessible for visitors."
The project is funded through the City's infrastructure budget and a provincial green infrastructure grant. City staff and By-law Enforcement will monitor the site to ensure public safety, and crews will work Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitors can still enjoy the lookout, the festival grounds, and the Tamsin River Trail System. Some trail sections near the work zone will have temporary signs and detours.
Residents who live along Benchlands Drive or use the park during the work period should follow all temporary detour signs, keep dogs on a leash in the active work zones, and report any safety concerns to By-law Enforcement. The City appreciates your cooperation as we complete these upgrades.
