Ambrel Lake Park winter trail system opens for Ice Days preparation

The City of Wrenford is opening the winter trail system at Ambrel Lake Park this week, setting the stage for the annual Ice Days celebration in February. Council approved the seasonal trail maintenance schedule and associated winter safety measures during the October 28 meeting.

The 1.2-kilometre loop around Ambrel Lake Park will be regularly groomed for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter walking. The grooming schedule aligns with the City’s broader winter maintenance plan, which prioritizes multi-use trails like the Tamsin River Trail System before residential side streets. Crews from Roads & Winter Maintenance will treat the trail with a sand and salt mix when temperatures drop below -5°C to improve traction while protecting the surrounding boardwalk and natural areas.

"We want to make sure residents can safely enjoy the outdoors all winter long," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "Grooming the trails at Ambrel Lake Park is a key part of our plan to keep the community active and connected, especially as we prepare for the Ice Days events next month."

Council also directed staff to increase patrols on the trail system during peak hours and to coordinate with the Wrenford Police Service for additional visibility. By-law Enforcement officers will monitor the area to ensure compliance with the Noise By-law and the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law, particularly regarding sidewalk clearance and vehicle parking.

Residents are encouraged to follow a few simple guidelines while using the trails:

  • Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, as daylight hours are short.
  • Keep dogs on a short leash or use the designated off-leash area at Hollis Park Off-Leash Area.
  • Report any trail hazards, blocked catch basins, or fallen trees by calling 311 or using the online service request form.

The winter trail system will remain open until spring, weather permitting. If the trail closes due to thawing or excessive moisture, a notice will be posted on the City’s website and social media channels.
