Wrenford launches new waste diversion master plan for 2024

The City of Wrenford is launching the Waste Diversion Master Plan for 2024 today, November 5, 2023. The plan outlines a clear roadmap for how you, local businesses, and the City will work together to keep more materials out of the landfill and move closer to a zero-waste future.

The master plan builds on the success of the Blue Box, Green Bin, and Black Cart programs already running across the city. It introduces updated collection guidelines for multi-family buildings, new recycling options for electronics and textiles, and expanded drop-off depot hours at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. The City also sets a target to divert 60 per cent of residential waste from the landfill by 2030, and 70 per cent by 2040.

"This plan gives us a clear path forward," says Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning. "By making it easier to recycle and compost, and by updating how we collect waste, we can protect our environment while keeping service costs stable for you."

Residents can start using the new Waste Sorting Quick Reference Card, available at City Hall and online. The plan also introduces the Wrenford Waste Wise Ambassador programme, recruiting volunteers to help neighbours sort their bins correctly. Businesses with multi-unit buildings will receive a free Waste Diversion Guide to help them meet the new collection requirements.

To get started, visit the Garbage & Recycling hub for updated collection schedules and bin preparation tips. You can also view the live Waste Diversion Dashboard to track the City's progress each month. If you have questions about what goes in which bin, the Waste program frequently asked questions page has you covered. Share your ideas and feedback through the Waste management master plan portal.
