New affordable housing strategy outlines six key priorities

On November 15, 2023, Wrenford City Council approved a new affordable housing strategy that sets out six key priorities to help residents find safe and affordable places to live. The plan was developed with input from community groups, housing providers, and residents across the city.

Housing costs have risen across Ontario, and Wrenford is no exception. This strategy gives the City a clear roadmap to address those challenges while working with partners to keep our neighbourhoods accessible for everyone.

The strategy is built on six main priorities:

  • Expand affordable rental options by updating zoning rules in growing neighbourhoods to allow more multiplexes and secondary suites.
  • Speed up approvals for laneway homes and secondary suites so homeowners can add rental units to their properties faster.
  • Support non-profit developers with fee rebates and grants to build and maintain affordable rental units.
  • Protect tenants by strengthening rental housing standards and improving dispute resolution services.
  • Partner with local agencies to expand supportive housing for seniors and youth who need extra care and services.
  • Secure more funding by working with provincial and federal governments on larger housing projects and infrastructure.

“Housing is the foundation of a healthy community,” said City Manager Robert Eng. “This strategy gives us a clear roadmap to work with our partners and residents to make sure everyone in Wrenford has a place to call home.”

You can review the full strategy and submit your feedback through the City's online portal. The City will also host community information sessions at the Wrenford Public Library — Main Branch and the Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre in December to answer questions and gather more input.
