Council approves 2024 operating budget with 2.5 per cent tax increase

Wrenford City Council approved the 2024 operating budget and capital budget at its regular meeting on November 6, 2023. The operating budget totals $485 million and includes a 2.5 per cent property tax increase for residential and business properties.

The tax increase is split across key areas to keep the city moving forward. One per cent will go toward road repairs and winter maintenance. Another per cent supports the Wrenford Police Service and Fire Rescue. The remaining half per cent funds parks, trails, and community programs. For a typical home in Wrenford, the annual tax bill will rise by about $42.

The capital budget sets aside $65 million for major projects over the next year. This includes resurfacing streets in the Benchlands and Northgate neighbourhoods, replacing aging water mains, and upgrading the Eastfield Twin Arenas. The budget also funds the Corvid Creek Ravine Pathway Extension, expected to open in spring 2027.

"This budget keeps our core services running smoothly while making strategic investments in the places we use every day," said City Manager Robert Eng. "We listened to residents during our budget engagement sessions, and this plan balances fiscal responsibility with the improvements you asked for."
