The City of Wrenford is launching the Downtown Merchant Revitalization Grant today, offering funding to help local businesses upgrade their storefronts and expand their services. Starting November 6, 2023, eligible downtown merchants can apply for grants of up to $7,500 to cover eligible improvements.
The programme is designed to support independent shops and service providers in the downtown core. To qualify, applicants must hold a valid business licence and operate within the Downtown Business Improvement Area boundaries. The grant covers exterior signage, window repairs, accessibility upgrades, and energy-efficient lighting. A review of similar initiatives shows that storefront improvements increase foot traffic and extend the average shopping season.
Merchants can submit their applications through the Wrenford eLicence Portal or pick up a paper form at the Service Wrenford counter, 100 Mercer Street. Applications close on January 31, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. The City will review submissions on a first-come, first-served basis and notify successful applicants by March 15, 2024. Please note that a fifty per cent match is required, meaning you must cover half of the eligible project cost in cash or in-kind donations.
“Every brick-and-mortar shop is a cornerstone of our local economy,” said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “This grant removes the financial barrier for merchants who want to make their spaces safer, more welcoming, and ready for the next generation of shoppers.”
