Report a fire hazard

Report unsafe conditions like blocked exits, faulty wiring, or improper storage of flammable materials to the city fire department.

When to call 9-1-1

If you see smoke, flames, or smell burning right now, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not try to put it out yourself unless it is very small and you have a clear exit route.

Report a non-emergency hazard

Use this service for hazards that are not an immediate danger. This includes blocked fire escapes, faulty smoke alarms in rental units, improper storage of flammable liquids, or exposed electrical wiring that looks unsafe. We will send a fire inspector to review the situation within two business days.

How to submit a report

  • Online: Fill out the Fire Hazard Reporting Form.
  • By phone: Call 519-555-0115 during business hours to speak with our fire prevention office.
  • By email: Send details to [email protected].

What to include

Make sure your report has the exact address, a clear description of the hazard, and your contact information. If you are reporting on behalf of a business or landlord, include the property owner's name.

What happens next

Our fire prevention team reviews every report. If the hazard breaks a city rule, like the Property Standards By-law 2019-112 or rental licensing requirements, we will contact the property owner to fix it. If the owner does not act, the city can issue a fine or order a professional repair. You will receive a confirmation email with a reference number so you can check the status.
