Check boil water advisory status

Find out if there is a boil water advisory for your area and learn what to do during an advisory.

Check current status

Visit the Service Alerts page to see if a boil water advisory is active in your neighbourhood. Advisories are listed by street or ward and include the expected end date. If you do not see an advisory for your area, your tap water is safe to drink.

How to stay informed

We will send updates to your email if you sign up for Sign up for city emergency alerts. You can also call 311 or visit the Service Alerts page for the latest notices. We post updates as soon as laboratory results come back.

Rules during an advisory

When a boil water advisory is in effect, you must boil all tap water before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing your teeth, or washing dishes. Bring water to a rolling boil for one full minute, then let it cool before using it. You can also use bottled water or water from a certified water cooler. Do not use ice made from tap water, and ask your local café or restaurant to use boiled or bottled water until the advisory is lifted.

Advisories usually start when a water main breaks, when we flush hydrants for maintenance, or if there is a drop in water pressure. We test the water after repairs are finished. The advisory ends once we get two consecutive rounds of clean test results. This usually takes 24 to 48 hours.

If you need to prepare baby formula or have a weakened immune system, please follow the specific guidance on the Water & Wastewater page or contact our staff for advice.
