Join a city naturalist for a guided winter walk through Riverside Flats. You will explore the banks of the Tamsin River and learn how the river ecosystem changes when the water runs cold. The guide will point out bird tracks, winter bird behaviour, and the plants that survive under the snow.
This walk is free and open to all ages. Families are welcome, though children must stay with an adult. We meet at the Eastfield Boat Launch. Please dress warmly in layers, wear a hat and gloves, and bring sturdy boots for packed snow and ice. A thermos of hot tea will be provided at the end.
Registration is not required. Just show up at the meeting point five minutes before we start. The walk is about one kilometre and takes roughly one and a half hours. Please note that the trail surface is natural and covered in snow and ice in December. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. If you have mobility concerns, we can provide an alternative virtual tour of the river valley later in the week.
Bring a camera if you want to capture winter wildlife. The Tamsin River Trail System is right here, and this walk is a great way to see how the waterway supports local birds and mammals all year. For more information about our trails and parks, visit Parks & Trails.
