What is a fire safety plan for fire doors?
Every building in Wrenford that uses fire doors needs a fire safety plan for those doors. Fire doors keep smoke and flames from spreading between rooms and floors. Your plan shows how you will keep them working properly every day.
If you own or manage a commercial space, a multi-unit apartment building, or a large community building, you must have a plan on file with the City. Single-detached homes do not need this plan.
Who needs a plan?
You must file a plan if your building has more than one storey, contains a day care or senior residence, or has more than three separate rental units. Large retail stores and office buildings also require a plan. If you are unsure whether your building falls into this category, contact the Fire Prevention team for a quick check.
What to include in your plan
Your fire safety plan for fire doors must cover the basics. Make sure your document includes the following items:
- A complete fire door schedule listing every door, its exact location, and its required fire-resistance rating.
- Details on how each door closes automatically. Self-closing devices must work and be tested.
- Clear signage on doors that must stay latched, such as stairwell or exit doors.
- A logbook for monthly inspections. Staff must check hinges, latches, glass panels, and seals, and write down the date.
- Contact details for the person responsible for keeping the doors in good shape.
How to submit your plan
You can upload your plan using the Fire safety plans for buildings portal. The portal is open twenty-four hours a day. You will need to create an account and select the fire door plan category.
Once you upload the file, a fire inspector will review it. We aim to finish reviews within five business days. If we need changes, we will email you a list of notes. You have thirty days to send a revised version.
Fees and timelines
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Initial plan review | $125.00 |
| Re-inspection visit | $150.00 |
| Annual plan update | $75.00 |
Fees are due before we release an approval letter. Plans must be updated every twelve months or whenever a door is changed. You must upload the new version to the portal before the old one expires.
Keep doors clear and unblocked
Fire doors must stay clear at all times. Do not prop them open with wedges or heavy objects. Do not store boxes, recycling bins, or equipment in front of them. If a door is blocked, it will fail an inspection and you could face a fine under the By-laws.
