Commercial waste disposal guidelines

Guidelines for businesses in Wrenford on proper commercial waste disposal, container requirements, and collection services.

Commercial waste disposal guidelines

As a business owner in the City of Wrenford, you are responsible for managing your own waste. Unlike residential properties, commercial entities must follow specific rules to ensure safe and efficient collection. This page outlines the requirements for containers, waste separation, and pickup services.

Approved containers

All commercial waste must be placed in approved containers. You may use city-provided black carts if you have a valid commercial service account, or you may use private commercial dumpsters if your volume exceeds cart capacity. Containers must be placed at the curb or designated pickup area no later than 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Ensure lids are fully closed and containers are stable to prevent spillage.

Waste separation requirements

To support the City’s sustainability goals, you must separate waste into three streams:

  • Organics: Food scraps and yard waste must go in a green bin or approved compostable bags. Do not include plastic bags or non-organic materials.
  • Recycling: Clean paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and glass must go in a blue bin. Rinse containers to avoid contamination. Flatten cardboard boxes to save space.
  • Garbage: Non-recyclable and non-compostable waste goes in the black cart or dumpster. Do not place recyclables or organics in your garbage stream.

Special waste streams

Businesses generating specific types of waste must handle them separately. Asbestos waste disposal guidelines must be followed strictly for any renovation or demolition involving asbestos. Construction debris, such as drywall and shingles, requires special handling and should not be mixed with general commercial waste. Refer to the Construction and demolition waste disposal page for details on drop-off locations and packaging rules.

Scheduling and service

Collection frequency depends on your business type and volume. Most small businesses are on a weekly schedule, while larger operations may require twice-weekly pickup. You can view your specific schedule on your service account or by contacting the waste services department. If you need a new cart or a replacement due to damage, visit Request a new or replacement waste cart. For questions about opening or closing your service account, see Open or close waste service account.

Reporting issues

If your commercial waste was not collected, or if you see illegal dumping of business waste, report it immediately. Use the 311 service line or the online portal to Report a missed garbage or recycling collection. Failure to comply with commercial waste by-laws may result in fines. For more information on enforcement, see Illegal dumping reporting and enforcement.
