When you need a new street name
You must apply for a new street name when you are developing a new subdivision, adding a long private driveway that serves multiple properties, or creating a new cul-de-sac that needs a formal civic address. A clear street name keeps first responders, delivery drivers, and utility workers safe and helps you receive mail and services without delay.
How names are chosen
Wrenford follows provincial guidelines for geographic naming. All new street names must be unique within the city and cannot match any existing street, road, or lane. We avoid names that sound alike to prevent confusion for emergency dispatchers.
Our naming convention reflects Wrenford's history and neighbourhood character. New residential streets typically follow these patterns:
- Crescents and courts often use tree or bird names (for example, Maple Crescent or Kingfisher Court).
- Drives and boulevards usually take the name of the surrounding neighbourhood.
- Streets and roads in newer areas may honour local families, early settlers, or community volunteers.
Council has the final say on all new street names. Staff will review your suggestion for spelling, length, and compatibility with the rest of the grid before it goes to a council meeting.
What to submit
Every application must include a current site plan showing the proposed layout. You will also need to propose up to three name choices, listed in order of preference. Please make sure your proposed names do not conflict with nearby communities or provincial highways.
If you are working with a surveyor or civil engineer, they can help prepare the required drawings and confirm that the new route meets our engineering standards. You can also review the Zoning by-law and Planning & Development pages for subdivision requirements.
Application fee and processing time
The application fee is $250.00. This covers the administrative review, GIS mapping update, and council presentation. The fee is due when you submit your paperwork and is non-refundable.
Processing usually takes four to six weeks, depending on how quickly your site plan is approved and whether the name needs to be discussed at a council meeting. We will email you a confirmation once your new street is officially recorded and added to our civic addressing system.
