Our commitment to safety
The City of Wrenford is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone who works for the City, visits our facilities, or uses our services. We follow Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Building Code Act, 1992, and other relevant legislation to protect our staff, contractors, and the general public. If you work for or with the City, this policy outlines what you need to know to stay safe on the job.
Who this applies to
This policy covers all City employees, elected officials, volunteers, and any contractors or service providers working on City-owned, leased, or controlled property. It also sets out safety expectations for the public when using City facilities, parks, and worksites. You are responsible for following all posted safety signs and instructions while on City property.
Key responsibilities
- City management provides the resources and direction needed to keep workplaces safe. City Manager Robert Eng oversees the City's overall health and safety program.
- Department heads ensure their teams follow safe work practices, complete required training, and report hazards promptly.
- Contractors must adhere to all safety rules outlined in the City's Health and Safety Manual and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act when working on City property. You must register with our Procurement Office before starting any work.
- Everyone has the right to refuse unsafe work and the responsibility to report hazards, incidents, and near-misses.
Training and orientation
All new City employees and contractors must complete a health and safety orientation before starting work. Ongoing training covers topics like working at heights, confined spaces, fall protection, and handling hazardous materials. Department heads are responsible for ensuring their staff stay current with required certifications. If you are a contractor, your company must provide proof of valid safety training before we issue a work permit.
Health and Safety Committee
The City Health and Safety Committee meets monthly to review workplace incidents, inspect facilities, and recommend improvements. The committee includes representatives from management, frontline staff, and contractor groups. You can attend meetings as an observer or submit agenda items to the City Manager's office. Meeting summaries are posted on the policies page within two weeks of each session.
Reporting hazards and incidents
If you notice a hazard or experience a workplace incident, report it immediately to your supervisor or the By-law Enforcement team. You can also submit a report online or visit us in person. Prompt reporting helps us fix problems before they cause serious harm.
